Your Orchids Will Thrive With These Orchid Care Tips

Posted by Sarah Duke

Orchids are known to be fussy plants to raise; nevertheless the beautiful blooms they produce are more than worth it. Here are a handful of guidelines that will help your orchids to flourish.

Growing Medium: Orchids won't thrive in regular potting soil. This form of growing medium is generally too thick and can accumulate around the plant's roots and strangle them. In place of utilizing conventional growing medium, you'll have to use a specialized orchid growing medium consisting of a mixture of organic and inorganic materials. Keep the orchid's roots well ventilated by making sure that the medium isn't packed too compactly and that you use a pot that fits properly. Avoid choosing a pot that's too big since it will retain a high amount of moisture that your orchid doesn't want, which can result in rotting of the roots.

Humidity: The ecosystem of an orchid is the humid regions of the mountains and rainforests. If they are cultivated inside a home, they'll try hard to duplicate this environment yet, with exclusion of the bathroom, the orchid's natural habitat cannot be replicated inside without some effort. To make it similar, you must mist the area surrounding your orchid to ensure that it obtains the moisture it requires to flourish. You can also put containers of water, a humidifier or a water fountain next to the plant. You might want to raise your orchids in a hothouse as these structures usually have elevated humidity levels with good air movement.

Sunlight: Orchids like sunshine providing it's not harsh. Light that's too strong can cause harm to your orchid and its foliage. If you see a ruddy tint to your orchid's foliage, it's a sign that it is exposed to too much sunlight. Make sure to reposition the plant to a less sunny location, or give it a bit of shade using blinds or curtains.

Temperature: Orchids flourish in the temperature range of 70 to 90 degrees F; although, the exact temperature span varies depending on the variety of orchid you are cultivating. For a lot of orchid varieties, temperatures will need to drop during the night as well as the inactive times so that they can flower. If you are raising your orchids indoors, maintaining the proper temperature isn't that hard and you don't have to do anything further to the surroundings. Yet if there are issues, you might need to reposition the plant to a different area throughout particular periods of the year.

Water: Make certain to water your orchid cautiously. Typically, an orchid doesn't require water more than once each week. If you're not sure if your plant needs water, look into how wet the growing medium is. If it's still fairly damp, don't give it more water. If it's totally dry, it's time to water your orchid.

There are countless varieties of flower that you can raise, but the orchid is certainly a favorite of many gardeners. There are a few important guidelines that you need to keep in mind though. Find out more about these beautiful flowers and how to tend them at Caring for Orchids.
