Ways For Your Green Roof Care

Posted by Peter Goodman

Do you have your own green roof at home? Are you living in an urban area which has sedum or green
roofing? Thinking of various ways on how to take care and maintain the good condition of your green
roof? Whether you have an intensive or the extensive type of sedum roof actually depends on whether
you prefer to execute intensive maintenance on the intensive sedum roof or the extensive maintenance
required by the extensive sedum roof.

Whatever kind of roof you have it still needs a bit of attention or the vegetation in it could actually die
a slow death. The extent of maintenance you have to do for your roof depends on how meticulous you
were when the time the roof was created. If you wanted a simple one, for sure cleaning and maintaining
it would not be a big deal. However, if you opted for the complex sedum roof design, it might be the
otherwise.

Not only that, did you actually consider the weather in your area in choosing the plants for your green
roof? Did you utilize certain growth mediums for your green roof? Were you able to have it installed or
planted internally? Was the plants in the green roof planned in connection to the roof being exposed
to sun for quite a long period of time? Did you initially plan your green roof to have plants which can
withstand all sorts of strong winds and heavy snow? These are just some initial factors which should be
considered before having your green roof installed. In addition to that, identifying these factors at an
early time can actually guide you in maintaining and taking care of your green roof.

Usually plants take around three months to achieve its full form. At this event, these plants may need
some form of watering or an irrigation system. This system may either be directly installed in your roof
which automatically waters your roof or it can come from you physically as you go up your roof and you
water your plants directly. If you have an extensive green roof, you might be surprised to find out that
it only requires little maintenance. On the other hand, the intensive green roof will need a certain form
of irrigation which is almost the same as your usual backyard garden. If the soil you placed is quite thin,
it may lose water more quickly than the usual, which is more evident if your roof is unprotected from
other elements such as water and snow.

To be able to maintain your green roof, it may need some fertilizer as well. There have been previous
studies pertaining to plant growth and the use of fertilizers. To be able to put your green roof into its
optimum form, you have to be specific with your fertilizers. Some plants require a specific fertilizer for
them to grow better. In addition to that, if you have added some nurseries on your green roof, you
might want to fertilize then as well for the three months upon planting.
