Be sure of the best time: You may not be sure about the best time for pruning climbers in your garden. There are a few tips which you need to follow as far as lawn care and pruning of climbers is concerned. When the blooms of early summer flowering plants and spring flowering plants fade, it is usually the best time for pruning climbers. By pruning in late winter, the flowering of plants in late summer can be encouraged.
Using bypass secateurs make an angled cut when pruning healthy wood, by cutting close to a healthy bud and sloping away from it. In diluted garden disinfectant, wash the saws, loppers and blades of secateurs. This should be done when you cut diseased wood especially, since the condition can spread from one plant to another.
Pruning common climbers: One of the most common climbers is Honeysuckle. Supports like trellis, wires etc. are needed to help the Honeysuckle and Lonicera climb for support. To keep the growth within bound it is necessary to prune every year, especially when the space is limited. After flowering, if there is any straggly growth it should be removed. Spring time is the best time for pruning late summer varieties. Every two to three years the Lonicera Japonica needs to be pruned by cutting back hard, to at least one meter, because it could otherwise become top heavy.
The Virginia creeper covers a large area and needs to be restrained too. Rather than sideways it is inclined to grow upwards. By cutting some of the overcrowded and older stems in winter, its growth can be reduced annually. If necessary, in the growing season you can trim the growth back from downpipes, windows and gutter. This should be repeated in winter. In other varieties like Clematis, pruning varies according to the flowering season. Damaged, thin and weak shoots need to be pruned to the ground level or out to their point of origin.
