The Art of Growing Seedless Grapes
Children come up with questions in just anything. You will be surprised to hear the same questions that you asked yourself once , but never got to the answer because of your busy schedule. Kids would ask questions that would sometimes take you aback. We were eating seedless grapes when my daughter asked me where they come from. You might think that seedless grapes were initially bred into existence but they're not. Now, you would not expect this delicious variety to be fortuitous, but they are. Due to a genetic defect, seeds forming "kill themselves" and we are left with delightful grapes without the not-so-delightful seeds.
The Thompson variety is the most popular seedless grape. Great Sultana or Sultana are its other names. Seedless grapes have such small berries you just have to content yourself with it. Studies are actually ongoing to increase the size of the berries.
Grapes with seeds are easier to grow than the seedless variety. It would be less taxing to grow grapes with seeds if its your first time to venture into grape growing. This will give you the experience in growing your own vine and prepare you for the more intricate process of raising the seedless variety.The seedless variety are known to be more sensitive to weather.
Recently, there have been varieties that have been bred to stand up specifically to this weakness. Look for Vanessa, Reliance and Einset Seedless.You can look around for Reliance, Vanessa and Einset Seedless to name a few. Remember, success is more likely if you do not live in extremely high or low temperature.
Even if seedless grapes are undersized, they are still the preference because people won't be inconvenienced in always spitting seeds.I am glad my daughter raised questions about seedless grapes. You never know when this information might come in handy. Next time, maybe, dining with friends, or shopping for groceries. Life is made more interesting with our children's queries.
