One of the easiest Indoor Gardens to begin with is an Indoor Herb Garden. It can be a very Basic Herb Garden or one that includes every herb that you use in your daily cooking.
Starting an Indoor Herb Garden does not involve any extensive planning or space and even if you live in a small apartment, condominium, or townhouse, all you really require is a southern or western facing window that gets about 5 to 6 hours of sunlight a day. However, even if you only have northern or eastern facing windows, that only get residual sunlight and shade, you can still grow a variety of herbs.
First off you will need some planters based on your chosen location and preference. Herbs can be grown together, so you can choose from either window boxes, small or medium sized terracotta pots 6 inches in diameter or more, or you can purchase an Indoor Herb Garden kit, like the ones pictured below that will already include everything you need to get started.

The following is a list of the easiest herbs to start with and that will also make an impressive display once they grow in. If you have southern or western facing windows the Basic Herb Garden choices are thyme, coriander, basil, dill, parsley, chives, sage, tarragon and rosemary. For northern and eastern facing windows your Indoor Herb Garden choices are spearmint, peppermint, chives, oregano and parsley is included here as well.
You can start your Indoor Herb Garden one of two ways, by planting seeds, or buying seedlings from your local garden shop, nursery and even some supermarkets sell the seeds and plants. Basil, chives, parsley, thyme, oregano are best started from seeds. Mint, rosemary, and tarragon are best bought as seedlings.
Once you have selected your planters, location and your herbs, the next step is to fill your planters half full of potting soil mix with equal parts of potting soil, peat moss and vermiculite. If you are planting seedlings, place your herbs in the soil within equal distances of each other and then add more potting soil up to 1 inch below the rim of the planter. If you are planting seeds then follow the directions that are written on the package, each herb will require a suttle variance. Once complete, tamp the soil down firmly and then water liberally with a spray bottle that you can keep next to your Indoor Herb Garden. Each day the soil should be damp to the touch, but not soaked through.
Once your Indoor Herb Garden starts producing, use it as often as you cook because the more you cut the herbs, the more they will grow and florish in your Basic Herb Garden.
