Controlling Rodents And Pests With Natural Solutions

Posted by Michelle Smart Mark Smyle Michael Brandon Robert Richards

While there are people who like to have rodents as pets, most people don't want them in their homes and see them as pests that can carry disease. Putting out traps, getting a cat, or sprinkling poison around their homes are just some of the ways that they use to try to get rid of them. For a lot of people, though, the idea of getting rid of the rodents is coupled with an unease at deliberately and often inhumanely killing them, and people are starting to look for better ways to get them out of and away from their homes that don't involve harm to the little creatures.

If you want to remove rats and mice from your home and/or discourage them from coming around the good news is that there are natural solutions for rodent control that you can use so you don't have to kill them. Killing them 'humanely' has been another argument that people have made, but what constitutes 'humane' killing is certainly arguable, so no real conclusion on that has been reached. There aren't that many choices for people who don't want to kill rodents or cause them to suffer but who certainly don't want them around, but there are two: trapping them humanely and releasing them elsewhere, and using natural methods to keep others away.

Live traps, not the kind that snap, can be used to trap rodents that are in or near your home without hurting them. With live traps the rodent is lured inside and the door closes, so the mouse or rat just remains there until you (or someone else if you're squeamish) remove the trap to a different location and open the door. Some people think that the catch-and-release method of rodent control doesn't work because the rodents just come right back, but if they are taken far enough away they generally won't return to your home, because they'll find a closer place instead.

Before you take any drastic measures to get rid of rats or mice be sure that you aren't giving them a reason to come around your home. Things like keeping woodpiles and compost piles away from your home, keeping your trash cans tightly closed, and not leaving your pets' food sit outside where rats and mice can smell it can go a long way toward keeping your house and yard free of rodents. If you follow simple tips like these, and trap and remove any rodents you might already have around, the odds are that your rodent problem will go away.

However, if you've tried that and it hasn't been enough, or if you already do these things and there are still rodents, there is more that you can do without causing harm, such as getting special fragrance pouches that discourage mice and rats from coming into your home. These aren't toxic and you can't smell them, but rodents can " and they don't like them at all. This can help to clear up a stubborn rodent problem for people who are very serious about getting rid of the rodents and keeping them out of their homes but equally serious about not killing or torturing them.

For people who don't mind killing the rats and mice but would prefer not to use chemicals and traps to do so, getting a cat or even a small dog can often do the trick. Cats, especially, are natural predators for rats and mice, and they'll be inclined to give chase without any training. The downside to this is that the cats will not generally eat what they kill, so they may leave the dead rodents as 'presents' for the family, and this can be an unpleasant find that a lot of people would really prefer to avoid if possible.

No matter what rodent control method you choose, the best thing you can do is to know the facts about whichever treatment you choose, because you don't want to use something that you thought was safe only to find out that it wasn't. This is especially true if you have small children or if you have pets that could potentially get into any rodent poison that you might put out. You don't want to take a chance with your family's health by putting out dangerous chemicals, but you certainly don't want them to be exposed to rats and mice in your home, either.

Inspect Your Roofs Carefully

Posted by Scott Rodgers

Roof is the most important aspect of your home. It is a safety covering for us. It keeps us and our home safe from the changing climatic conditions. So maintain your roofs well as getting a roof repaired or replacing it can be a troublesome job.

Unfortunately, we often ignore the roofs of the house and remain unaware of the little problems until they turn up into serious issues. So it is very essential to detect the weakening signs of a roof so that they can be repaired in the early stages it self.

Use binoculars to get a clear view of the roof. You can use a ladder to see over your roof and which is actually essential for careful inspection. The changing weather conditions can affect your roofs so make sure to check your roofs especially after strong wind storms and after every fall.

The first place to check is along the ridges of the roof, the points where the shingles are folded over. Any cracks you see can easily turn into leaks if not caught in time.

Roof valley is another area prone to defects like leaks and corrosion. They have metal covering called flashing so check if it is in good condition and does not have any gaps or is rusted. Chimneys also have flashing surrounding them. Dont forget to check that area as well.

Then look for any missing or out of shape shingles. These can cause damage to the interiors of the home as well like the walls and the ceilings. So, they should be replaced at the earliest without any delays.

Roof gutters should be periodically checked. Make sure that the water is flowing properly to the down pipe and there is no clogging there. Otherwise this can cause the water to back up can damage the lower shingles. It is very important to keep the gutters clean. Also check for the roof-gutter coating. It should be strong.

Checking the roofs at least twice a year is a must. Identifying these wilting signs at early stages can save a lot of money in future.

How to Choose and Use Mosquito Control Repellents Wisely

Posted by Russ Frank

Mosquitoes know when humans are nearby. Even from a distance they can sense the heat and carbon dioxide that we give off. The way mosquito repellents typically work is by masking those cues that attract mosquitoes. Because several important diseases are transmitted by mosquitoes, it's important to use a good mosquito repellent.

Mosquito repellents don't work exactly the same for everyone. They work better for some and not as well on others. The factors involved include the age, gender and activity level of the person involved. The type of mosquito is a factor as well. Another important fact is that mosquito repellents only work on the surface they're applied to.

One of the most effective repellents is DEET. Another good one is picaridin. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends these products because they work well and offer long lasting protection. DEET was first offered for sale in 1957 and has an excellent safety record.

The amount of active ingredient in a mosquito repellent is very important. The higher the concentration of active ingredient, the longer the protection lasts. If you're normally outside for 3-4 hours, a product with 20% or more of DEET offers good protection. If you're typically outside for less than 3 hours, products with less than 20% DEET or 7% picaridin offer protection.

According to various agencies and organizations, these mosquito repellents products are safe. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says DEET does not pose any health threat and is not a human carcinogen. The CDC recommends not combining sunscreen products with other products containing DEET. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics products that contain DEET are safe to use on children over two months old.

The CDC recommends two other active ingredients that typically provide reasonably long protection, although not as long as the higher concentrations of DEET. They are oil of lemon eucalyptus and IR3535. Oil of lemon eucalyptus is a synthetic version of the real product. EPA's testing indicates that oil of lemon eucalyptus provides protection similar to low concentrations of DEET. Read the label however, as that product should not be used on children under 3 years of age.

In spite of widespread advertising, there is no scientific evidence that the ultrasonic mosquito repellent devices work. Current beliefs that eating garlic, vitamins, onions, or any other food can repel mosquitoes are not true. The portable mosquito traps that emit carbon dioxide are too new to have been thoroughly tested yet.

Here are the ground rules for using mosquito repellents safely: Read and follow the instructions on the label. Only apply these products to exposed skin. Don't use these products under clothing. Don't apply to cuts, wounds or rashes. Don't apply near eyes or mouth, and apply lightly around the ears. Don't allow children to apply these products. When you return indoors, wash with soap and water or bathe.

Should You Consider Aquaponics?

Posted by Emily Cox

Are you looking for ways to go green these day? It's certainly all the rage, especially when it comes to organic food. But if we look more closely at how we grow our food, we can find a way to take our ecological efforts to a whole new level.

What I'm talking about here is aquaponics. It's one of the best ways to conserve our resources and our space. If you've never heard of aquaponics, you're not alone. It's still very new to the public, but actually aquaponics has been around for ages. Some might say it's as old as dirt.

Aquaponics is basically just the combination of hydroponics (growing plants in water) and aquaculture (growing fish in a tank). The plants and the fish work together to keep the system in balance. The fish provide fertilizer for the plants, while the plants filter the water for the fish. It's an eloquent picture of the balance of nature.

But besides this beautiful balance of nature, just what do we get from aquaponics? Why should we try to grow our food this way?

First, we can conserve water with aquaponics. The water within an aquaponics system circulates from fish to plants and back to the fish again. Very little, if any, of the water is wasted. It's a great way to conserve one of our most precious natural resources.

Secondly, it conserves space. More plants can be grown in less space with aquaponics than with traditional garden techniques. Some folks propose that 10 times the number of plants can be grown with aquaponics in the same space. That means more food per acre, which translates into feeding more people worldwide with less space.

And finally, the plants actually grow much faster with aquaponics. The waste from the fish provides rich nutrients to the plants which are supplied directly to the roots via the water. As a result, the plants absolutely thrive. In some cases they grow up to twice as fast as traditional gardens.

Basically, an aquaponics system will not just make you more ecologically responsible, but it will put your garden on organic overdrive. Plus, you'll have fish to eat in addition to your abundant harvest. So you might want to begin checking out aquaponics systems in your area. It's the wave of the future.

Rotary Model Maintenance

Posted by Alison Addy

When we talk about lawn mower, we refer fundamentally to two available models in the market, known to most homeowners: one is called the rotary and the other is the engine model.

Rotary Model Maintenance

The rotary is a manual model very common in many households. This model has the advantage of having very simple maintenance. The secret of the rotary model maintenance is to keep the blades clean and sharp. When you mow your lawn, the blades come into contact not only with grass but with organic matter, dirt, eventually garbage or stones. Check the blades after every mowing, find if they are too dirty, or damaged. Proceed to clean them before storing the lawn mower and if there is a damage, repair or replace.

The rotary mechanism has to be maintained and checked frequently, especially in spring and summer. Oiling the rotary mechanism is important, don't disregard this point in lawn care mower maintenance routine. Try to avoid any possible trouble to your lawn mower, like dust, rust, dirt in excess and stone, the last can seriously damage the mechanism and maybe calls for a replacement.

Engine Type Lawn Mower Maintenance

Engine type lawn mower has its rule and have to be followed to extend the life span of your lawn mower. Basically, check out if you are using the type of fuel or gas that is recommended for your lawn mower. Check it in the owner's manual and make sure you are using it. Remember that using something cheaper could look nice but can hurt your mower after a time. Check out air filter and spark control. These may need renewal every now and then, and specially when the heat months require frequent mowing.

Remember to sharpen your blades according to the necessity. Grass has to be well cut, not ripped off, so the blades should be in contrition. If you cannot sharpen the blades, call a professional.

Be it your equipment manual rotary or engine type, remember to tighten the nut and bolts, otherwise the blades come loose and it is dangerous.

Safe work is part of your lawn tractor maintenance routine. Never risk your hands, eyes or any part of your body when repairing or maintaining your lawn tractor. Don't underrate risk.

Now you have the basic lawn mower maintenance tips, and you see the simplicity to maintain the lawn mower and extend its practical life are really your allies. Benefit from it without delaying.
