It takes a lot of nutritional value for something to be labeled as a super food, but evidently sweet potatoes have what it takes to make the grade. Until now the only time you really could expect to see a dish of some kind made from sweet potatoes was during the holiday season on Thanksgiving or Christmas. Since their delicious nutritional goodness has become so much more publicized, people are trying to eat them more often. They can be served with the peel on and a little butter on top or bake them up in a sweet potato casserole or pie with a some sweetener added.
Many times people that plant a garden every spring or fall will avoid growing white potatoes, sweet potatoes or yams because they take up so much room on the ground when the vines begin to run. Even if you grow bushy tops varieties instead of vine producing, you still have to dig them up out of the ground and this can be backbreaking, time consuming work. One of the best ways to grow your own sweet potatoes is in containers. You don't plant sweet potatoes from seed, you plant the slips that stem from a mature sweet potato and it is easier than you think. Buy your slips at a farm supply store or just pick one or two up at your local supermarket and let them grow roots in water.
Picking containers for your sweet potatoes is pretty simple. You want them to be at least 2 or 3 feet deep and at least 12 inches diameter to accommodate one slip. If you want to plant as many as four or five slips per container, then obviously you will want the diameter of the container to be much larger. You will need the container to have adequate drainage since sweet potatoes don't excessive watering, but they must have enough to stay a little damp and keep the vines or tops alive and growing. You can choose sweet potatoes with a bushy top or a variety that grows vines. Some people like the vines because they are pretty to look at cascading over the sides of their container.
If you pick a sweet potato variety that has vines, you will have to either elevate the pot off of the ground and let the vines grow downward over the sides of the container or you can train them onto a trellis or stake and allow them to grow upwards. When your vines have begun to wither and die, it is about time to harvest and it will be much easier to do when all of the sweet potatoes are confined to the inside of a pot instead of in the ground in your garden.
If you have never tried indoor container gardening or outdoor container gardening, you are missing the opportunity to grow nutritious food even in a limited space. Sweet potatoes are a perfect vegetable to start with because it is such a popular newly recognized super food. You will have a good supply ready when those winter holidays roll around and perhaps enough to last later on in the winter too.

Green living remains new to a lot of individuals, and so there are plenty of misconceptions. One more myth is that driving an automobile is better than traveling by airplane. Driving your vehicle is only better than traveling by plane when your car is extremely fuel-efficient. A better alternative is to drive less often, and carpool as frequently as you can. Looking for ways to cut down on the number of miles all of the earth's citizens drive around the world is a superb way to help the planet. Another one of the myths about living green is that you should get your food locally. The most important thing to think about when choosing your food is how it is grown. To be greener in the most authentic sense, the food should be organic in nature. Not all food grown locally is organically grown. Thus, whether the food is obtained from the market or home grown, what determines the value is the method used to grow it.
One last myth claims that electric-powered cars are environmentally friendly. A high level of CO2 gas will be emitted by the electric-powered cars in these places. Electric automobiles will be beneficial for the planet when the electricity is generated by renewable sources. For nearly all of the myths involving green living, it isn't that they aren't true, it is just the context might be duplicitous.
Green living is a great way to live. It is better when you are doing it the right way. You have no reason to do things that you think will work for helping the planet, when they actually don't.

If you need to go to the local stores try to walk instead of drive. Walking can help you relax, great for your health as well as that of the earth, and save you a bit of money in the process.
3. When you are brushing your teeth, turn off the faucet Because water is just a turn of the tap away, we use it unthinkingly, and waste a lot as we do so. When cleaning your teeth ensure that you keep the faucet off, otherwise you'll be wasting a lot of water. Just imagine: you should brush your teeth for two minutes and in two minutes a lot of water is wasted. Instead put some water for rinsing your mouth in a glass ahead of time, so you aren't wasting water.
4. Having a shower uses less amount of water Take a quick shower instead of a bath, since it's been found to be more efficient in terms of both water and energy consumption. However, this isn't true if it takes you 20 minutes or more to shower! A short shower is great; if it becomes a long one, you won't be saving any water!
5. Don't leave lights on constantly Avoid leaving a light turned on in a vacant room. If there's no one in it, a room may as well have no lights on. You'll save money, conserve energy and benefit the environment this way. And switch the lights off when it's sunny outdoors; you should have sufficient natural light inside.
Adopting these quick tips shouldn't cost you anything. In fact, they'll probably save you money. So heed the invitation - begin living green.
