Planting a garden is a great way to prepare for the spring. Gardening is also a hobby that can be a rewarding way to display your hard work for all to see. The best time to plant bulbs is best done at the end of fall prior to the spring you would like them to bloom. Before beginning your gardening it is necessary to have all of the items you will need for starting the project. You will need seeds or bulbs, a tool for digging, markers, mulch and landscaping edging.
Remember when choosing seeds to read the packet and only purchase the ones that will grow well in an area you intend to use as a garden. If you only have shaded areas, there are plenty of pretty flowers that thrive well in shaded areas. The seeds will need to be planted in containers with good drainage when planting for indoor starts.
When picking out your seeds remember to read the packets and determine if they need a lot of sun, shade or both when planted in a garden. There are many beautiful flowers that will grow well in shade areas, so do not let this prevent you from enjoying a garden.
Put soil in the container, lay the seeds on top of soil and cover with a small amount of more soil. The containers should be place in well lit areas such as a window ledge. Turn the containers often to ensure they get sunlight on all areas of the plant.
Do not get disappointed if you do not notice a plant sprouting up in only a couple of days. It takes a couple of weeks for the plant to take hold and begin to grow. The plants will be about six to seven inches tall when it comes time to plant in spring.
Dig a hole approximately six inches deep for plants. Place plant in the hole and cover with dirt. Sprinkling in soil that has purchased with added nutrients will help the plants get the nutrition needed for strong growth.
Once you have all of the plants in the garden, mark the area with small markers to be able to identify what has been planted in each area. This is important if you have planted flowers requiring extra feedings so that it is only put in this area. After placing the markers, spread mulch throughout the garden. The mulch should be two inches thick. If you have decorative items put them in the garden next.
Edge the garden all the way around the outside of it about two to three inches deep. Place landscaping edging around the garden to prevent plants, seeds and water from spreading outside of the garden. Water the plants daily without over watering and feed them once a week. Keep weeds cleaned out and away from the flowers.

If you are finding it frustrating to keep grass or other plants from creeping into gardens or over paths, you may be interested in using landscaping edging. This is a great way not only to help keep plants where you want them instead of spreading like wildfire. It is also a great way to add visual interest to landscaped areas.
The first decision that you should make when you are planning to install edging is why you will be adding it to your yard or garden area. Is it to provide structure and form? Formal gardens often use edging to keep plants in specific areas and form precisely shaped beds in visually pleasing patterns. Is it because you want to keep grass from growing onto a path or into your vegetable garden? This can be great for keeping the amount of weeding you will do to a minimum.
If you look at these different reasons, you can see that certain materials are more suitable for certain uses. More natural uses such as delineating a garden plot or lining the side of a path may call for stone edging or wood edging. This looks natural, especially if the stones are rounded and tumbled like the ones you can find along the side of streams or rivers.
Are you interested in low maintenance edging that you don't need to keep checking or replacing every few years? If so, you may want to look at stone, brick or metal. Any edging that needs to be placed in a trench (such as plastic or metal sheet edging) may need to be adjusted and dug in repeatedly every few years. Therefore, stone, wood or brick may be the best choice for you. Keep in mind, however, that over time wood will break down and will need to be replaced. Even treated lumber will often need replacing although not as frequently.
You should also think about your budget when you decide which edging material you will purchase. Stone and brick can be quite a bit more expensive than plastic or metal sheet edging but since they last longer, in the long run it can cost a lot less than replacing the edging every few years. It can also mean a lot less work for you that can be quite worthwhile.
Comparing prices can be a fantastic way to get more durable materials without breaking your budget. You should look not only in garden supply and home improvement stores but also online. You may be able to get a great deal on edging materials that are more durable and longer lasting than others. You might also be able to find a great installer as well if you decide that it is too large a job for you to complete on your own.
You need to make sure that you prepare the area properly and have all of the materials you need together before you begin work. Proper preparation and research can help ensure that your job will go smoothly. It is amazing how edging can change the look of your yard and make it so much easier to maintain and care for properly.
