Controlling Rodents And Pests With Natural Solutions

Posted by Michelle Smart Mark Smyle Michael Brandon Robert Richards

While there are people who like to have rodents as pets, most people don't want them in their homes and see them as pests that can carry disease. Putting out traps, getting a cat, or sprinkling poison around their homes are just some of the ways that they use to try to get rid of them. For a lot of people, though, the idea of getting rid of the rodents is coupled with an unease at deliberately and often inhumanely killing them, and people are starting to look for better ways to get them out of and away from their homes that don't involve harm to the little creatures.

If you want to remove rats and mice from your home and/or discourage them from coming around the good news is that there are natural solutions for rodent control that you can use so you don't have to kill them. Killing them 'humanely' has been another argument that people have made, but what constitutes 'humane' killing is certainly arguable, so no real conclusion on that has been reached. There aren't that many choices for people who don't want to kill rodents or cause them to suffer but who certainly don't want them around, but there are two: trapping them humanely and releasing them elsewhere, and using natural methods to keep others away.

Live traps, not the kind that snap, can be used to trap rodents that are in or near your home without hurting them. With live traps the rodent is lured inside and the door closes, so the mouse or rat just remains there until you (or someone else if you're squeamish) remove the trap to a different location and open the door. Some people think that the catch-and-release method of rodent control doesn't work because the rodents just come right back, but if they are taken far enough away they generally won't return to your home, because they'll find a closer place instead.

Before you take any drastic measures to get rid of rats or mice be sure that you aren't giving them a reason to come around your home. Things like keeping woodpiles and compost piles away from your home, keeping your trash cans tightly closed, and not leaving your pets' food sit outside where rats and mice can smell it can go a long way toward keeping your house and yard free of rodents. If you follow simple tips like these, and trap and remove any rodents you might already have around, the odds are that your rodent problem will go away.

However, if you've tried that and it hasn't been enough, or if you already do these things and there are still rodents, there is more that you can do without causing harm, such as getting special fragrance pouches that discourage mice and rats from coming into your home. These aren't toxic and you can't smell them, but rodents can " and they don't like them at all. This can help to clear up a stubborn rodent problem for people who are very serious about getting rid of the rodents and keeping them out of their homes but equally serious about not killing or torturing them.

For people who don't mind killing the rats and mice but would prefer not to use chemicals and traps to do so, getting a cat or even a small dog can often do the trick. Cats, especially, are natural predators for rats and mice, and they'll be inclined to give chase without any training. The downside to this is that the cats will not generally eat what they kill, so they may leave the dead rodents as 'presents' for the family, and this can be an unpleasant find that a lot of people would really prefer to avoid if possible.

No matter what rodent control method you choose, the best thing you can do is to know the facts about whichever treatment you choose, because you don't want to use something that you thought was safe only to find out that it wasn't. This is especially true if you have small children or if you have pets that could potentially get into any rodent poison that you might put out. You don't want to take a chance with your family's health by putting out dangerous chemicals, but you certainly don't want them to be exposed to rats and mice in your home, either.

Lawn Problems During July Heat

Posted by Thomas Fryd

Activity has definitely slowed down during mid-day. Scarcely a leaf stirs. One of the pleasures of the July garden is the tree-shaded patio or terrace where the outdoor garden enthusiast may relax and survey the results of their labors. During this period of reflection it is good to take a second look at the results of the planning done in January and make further plans for the fall garden. In this day of air conditioning, big screen TV and Wii many people are prone to stay inside all day and not relax in the out-of-doors.

Patios and Terraces

Lucky indeed is the family which has a part of the garden developed as a retreat from the excessive heat or cramped interiors. These areas are easily designed and constructed and make a wonderful project for the entire family. They provide an ideal place for outdoor picnics and BBQ or regular eating and in the late evening they are delightful. Have you ever thought of providing a cable connection for the TV on these out-door terraces? There are many possibilities that when properly planned will give a wonderful use of the garden and relieve the house from much heavy traffic.

Lawns

Lawns always suffer during July. The grasses tend to turn brown and become dormant. This makes this very important part of the garden unsightly and encourages lawn diseases. Regular watering, feeding and mowing are essential to get the most out of a lawn during July. Feed once during July with a high nitrogen content fertilizer such a 16-20-0 or 18-8-8. Water thoroughly to prevent burning or streaking and to insure assimilation by grass plants. If there are weeds and foreign grasses present now they should be hoed or pulled. These pests rob the grass of in much needed food.

Everyone has their own method of mowing but if you will mow in an overlapping pattern of cuts somewhat as a farmer plows a field it is easy to double-cut and thoroughly eliminate streaking. Most essential for good mowing that the mower blades be sharp. Sharp blades make the job easier and are much easier on the grass. Beginning this month allow the grass to lengthen and raise the mower to cut at a of height of about three inches. This will protect the grass by shading, will discourage germination of crab grass and weeds, and, most important, will prevent undue loss of moisture by evaporation. As cooler weather comes, the mower should be lowered again to allow the grass to thicken for winter.

Perennials

July is the last time the chrysanthemums can be planted for fall bloom. These should be plants that are container grown or "bench" grown and rather fully developed. July planting has a great deal of merit in that the plants will not have time to become or overgrown to the point of being out of scale in the garden. On specimen chrysanthemums disbudding should be begun early to select the bud to develop into the bloom. All evidence of disbudding will soon disappear.

Most Daylilies like daylily bulbs need plenty of water now as many varieties are still producing and require a good supply of moisture to keep going. Plant the "rain lilies," better known as lycoris. The more common one, Lycoris squamigera is a beautiful addition to the early fall garden. As they flower on naked stalks they should be planted in company with other plants for a background and planting daylily bulbs can also do the trick. Many of the perennials will respond to careful feeding and water during July can be considered the ripening month for most perennials and this is all important in their life cycle.

Buddleia or summer lilac will continue blooming until frost if the faded blooms are kept cut. Prune wisterias now to stimulate new growth. They can take rather heavy pruning. Beans and Chinese cabbage can be replanted in the vegetable garden.

Inspect Your Roofs Carefully

Posted by Scott Rodgers

Roof is the most important aspect of your home. It is a safety covering for us. It keeps us and our home safe from the changing climatic conditions. So maintain your roofs well as getting a roof repaired or replacing it can be a troublesome job.

Unfortunately, we often ignore the roofs of the house and remain unaware of the little problems until they turn up into serious issues. So it is very essential to detect the weakening signs of a roof so that they can be repaired in the early stages it self.

Use binoculars to get a clear view of the roof. You can use a ladder to see over your roof and which is actually essential for careful inspection. The changing weather conditions can affect your roofs so make sure to check your roofs especially after strong wind storms and after every fall.

The first place to check is along the ridges of the roof, the points where the shingles are folded over. Any cracks you see can easily turn into leaks if not caught in time.

Roof valley is another area prone to defects like leaks and corrosion. They have metal covering called flashing so check if it is in good condition and does not have any gaps or is rusted. Chimneys also have flashing surrounding them. Dont forget to check that area as well.

Then look for any missing or out of shape shingles. These can cause damage to the interiors of the home as well like the walls and the ceilings. So, they should be replaced at the earliest without any delays.

Roof gutters should be periodically checked. Make sure that the water is flowing properly to the down pipe and there is no clogging there. Otherwise this can cause the water to back up can damage the lower shingles. It is very important to keep the gutters clean. Also check for the roof-gutter coating. It should be strong.

Checking the roofs at least twice a year is a must. Identifying these wilting signs at early stages can save a lot of money in future.

How to Choose and Use Mosquito Control Repellents Wisely

Posted by Russ Frank

Mosquitoes know when humans are nearby. Even from a distance they can sense the heat and carbon dioxide that we give off. The way mosquito repellents typically work is by masking those cues that attract mosquitoes. Because several important diseases are transmitted by mosquitoes, it's important to use a good mosquito repellent.

Mosquito repellents don't work exactly the same for everyone. They work better for some and not as well on others. The factors involved include the age, gender and activity level of the person involved. The type of mosquito is a factor as well. Another important fact is that mosquito repellents only work on the surface they're applied to.

One of the most effective repellents is DEET. Another good one is picaridin. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends these products because they work well and offer long lasting protection. DEET was first offered for sale in 1957 and has an excellent safety record.

The amount of active ingredient in a mosquito repellent is very important. The higher the concentration of active ingredient, the longer the protection lasts. If you're normally outside for 3-4 hours, a product with 20% or more of DEET offers good protection. If you're typically outside for less than 3 hours, products with less than 20% DEET or 7% picaridin offer protection.

According to various agencies and organizations, these mosquito repellents products are safe. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says DEET does not pose any health threat and is not a human carcinogen. The CDC recommends not combining sunscreen products with other products containing DEET. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics products that contain DEET are safe to use on children over two months old.

The CDC recommends two other active ingredients that typically provide reasonably long protection, although not as long as the higher concentrations of DEET. They are oil of lemon eucalyptus and IR3535. Oil of lemon eucalyptus is a synthetic version of the real product. EPA's testing indicates that oil of lemon eucalyptus provides protection similar to low concentrations of DEET. Read the label however, as that product should not be used on children under 3 years of age.

In spite of widespread advertising, there is no scientific evidence that the ultrasonic mosquito repellent devices work. Current beliefs that eating garlic, vitamins, onions, or any other food can repel mosquitoes are not true. The portable mosquito traps that emit carbon dioxide are too new to have been thoroughly tested yet.

Here are the ground rules for using mosquito repellents safely: Read and follow the instructions on the label. Only apply these products to exposed skin. Don't use these products under clothing. Don't apply to cuts, wounds or rashes. Don't apply near eyes or mouth, and apply lightly around the ears. Don't allow children to apply these products. When you return indoors, wash with soap and water or bathe.

Get those Hard to Reach Spots on your Tough Terrain Ride On Mower

Posted by Thomas Tate

If your backyard has some rough spots or is more of a field than a yard, then you probably need to invest in a tough terrain ride on mower. The ride on mower has made homeowners lives' that much easier for the last 70 years. Like all things mechanical, the technology has advanced to great heights over the years. At one time the design of a ride on mower had to do only with effectiveness and the way they cut the grass.

But then the need for tough terrain ride on mowers and demand dictated that manufacturers start designing and building mowers that could handle a rough yard. Bigger tires were put on, more powerful motors were used and mowing decks became technological marvels in how them deploy and work. Pretty soon there were great ride on mowers available to the public for all kinds of situations.

Even though tough terrain ride on mowers seemed to tackle the issue of how to take down tough lawns effectively and easily, there was still the problem of the rider's comfort. Back in the old days that wasn't really thought about much. But as people started developing back problem and other maladies from hours cutting the lawn, the manufacturers had to come up with ways to keep the riders comfortable while cutting the lawn superbly. With so much mechanical advancements over the years it shouldn't come as any surprise that ride on mowers for tough terrain would move forward with the rest of the world.

Tough terrain ride on mowers are a must for anyone who looks after a large piece of property. They not only save time as you can get the job done faster than if you used a walk behind mower or a poor quality ride on mower, but they can also save you a lot of money too as you don't have to hire an expensive landscaper to mow your grass.

Tough terrain ride on mowers have progressed a long way technology-wise. With the range of models available there is one just waiting for you. So to get the most out of your time and money, invest in a ride on mower for tough terrain. This way, you can spend more time appreciating your lawn rather than looking after it. And ride on mowers are fun and make the chore of mowing the lawn hardly seem like a chore at all.

How Patio Doors Are Built

Posted by Amy Nutt

Patio doors were originally created to replace French doors, offering an uninterrupted view of the natural daylight coming into the house, and providing easy access to the outdoors. As a result, patio doors are still hugely popular and due to demand, have become somewhat more elaborate over the years. However, they were not completely able to replace French doors; whereas the style and design of a French door is still seen as a classic and timeless look. However, the two are able co-exist on the market, benefiting the home-owner who has a choice of door options to consider.

At one point, a patio door was not a very secure entryway and easily accessible from the outside. Over time improvements have been made so now this is not as great an issue as it previously had been. There is also another issue of safety because the door, being a solid sheet of glass, is often seen as being open when it is actually not. To help remedy possible injuries, safety glass is now used to prevent people, especially children, from running headlong into the closed doors and getting severe lacerations.

When it comes to being energy efficient, patio doors perform very well. They are made with a series of brushes and seals which adhere to very stringent building code regulations. Producing the vinyl for door and window frames requires three times less energy to produce than manufacturing aluminum, thus making this product not only more cost effective, but also environmentally /energy friendly. To put this in perspective, it saves enough energy to heat almost 20, 000 single swelling family homes a year.

Most patio doors are made from vinyl or metal frames. The vinyl frames are made with up to 80% vinyl resin and then the remaining 20 % can be made up from various additives such as stabilizers to help prevent cracking and peeling. Pigments are also added to add the desired color as well to help create UV protection. Other additives help in preventing damage done during the shipping process.

Once the vinyl compound has been made, the chemical additives are locked in. Then, the resulting material is softened and forced through a die creating the unique shape that will eventually become the frame. These extruded pieces are shipped on pallets to the window / door fabricator where they are cut to the specified lengths and dimensions required to make the patio door.

After machines have cut the components to be assembled, the frames are often fusion welded together to form air tight and water tight seals at the corners. The installation of locks, keepers, balances, weather stripping, and finally the glass, are completed and the process is sent to quality control where the work is checked for air tightness, water tightness, and for any possible damages done to the frame or glass during assembly.

The use of vinyl frames for patio doors and windows helps your glass door maintain an even temperature so that there are limited condensation and humidity differences in the home. The quality of the air in the household is also greatly improved because glass doors mean less electricity is needed to heat and light the house. Lastly, an additional environmental bonus is the elimination of paint, stains, strippers, thinners which are not needed to maintain the patio doors appearance and function; saving the environment from harmful odors, chemical disposal, as well as leaving the home owner with free time to enjoy the view.

Patio doors are a great addition to any home and they can even increase the value of the home.

Annuals – A Great Source Of Landcsape Color

Posted by Kent Higgins

Dahlias give a wonderful display of late summer color in the landscape. These plants are warm weather lovers and are killed with the first frost. Prepare the soil well and plant the tubers deep when the soil is warm. The soil is normally prepared well in advance of planting time.

I once heard at a garden club meeting to use old cow manure," and put it deep in the hole with a layer of top soil over the manure. One lady asked the embarrassing question of... how old a cow?" That was the end of that meeting!

In selecting tubers for planting. make certain that a portion of the old stem is present otherwise, no plant; The bud from which growth is made is found only in this stem tissue. Dig the planting hole (soil preparation hole usually three times as deep) about six inches deep, and place the tuber with the stem or bud, if advanced, pointing up.

At this time, drive in a heavy stake for the varieties that need support, and most dahlias do. By putting the stakes in place at the time of planting, the danger of damaging roots later is eliminated. Fill the soil in over the tuber for about three inches and firm down. Water thoroughly, making sure that the tuber is well covered with soil. As the plant grows, gradually fill in around it until the soil is level. Water with caution to prevent rotting of tubers as the plant does not require an abundance of water until it is at least half grown. As most plants, though, it will require thorough soaking during its height of bloom, which is usually late summer.

Another summer flowering plant that gives much in return and can be planted this month is the garden canna. The rhizomes should have four eyes for best results, and if sprouted in trays of wet sand in a protected place, usually get a better start. The rhizome proper should be covered about four inches deep. These plants are heavy feeders and require lots of water during the season. Many colors of blooms are available... red, pink, white, yellow and orange. The foliage is also wonderful for arranging, with or without flowers. Many gardeners grow the bronze leaf variety for foliage only.

There are many summer flowering bulbs that need to be started in May, and some of the favorites are tigridias or shell flowers, anemones, ranunculus, tuberous begonias, Nerine lilies, hemerocallis, agapanthus and gloxinias. Some of these require very special care. They can not be grown in a landscape that "thrives on neglect." The secret of success with summer flowering bulbs is to plant when the soil has warmed, water well and feed lightly, mulch instead of cultivate and lift the storage roots after frost, and store for next season. Which is different than the green peace lily flowers that turn from white indoors.

Annuals: The seeds for annuals should be in the soil during May. This wonderful group of plants is one of our most valuable sources of color. Coming from seeds and returning of seeds in one season is the story of the plants in this group. Use annuals as ground cover for overplanting spring bulb locations, as borders in shrub plantings, as masses of color for accent purposes, and in many other ways around the garden. They are easy to grow and give color all summer.

Most of them can be used for cut flowers in the house. The list is long and tempting. Try a dozen" zinnia, petunia. alyssum. phlox, celosia, ageratum, snapdragon. sweet pea, salvia, periwinkle, larkspur and marigold. just look at the new varieties of the above list of old favorites.
