You can substitute sunlight with a variety of grow lights including led grow lights which are efficient and will save you money in the long run.
Basil prefers loose and light soil. They do better when water drains quickly so be sure to plant accordingly. Keep the plants about six to ten inches apart. If you use richer soil, you might get some off shoots come fall which can be later transplanted to your indoor setup so that you can enjoy fresh basil come December.
Growing basil outdoors is tricky for many so that's why there are many that grow indoors. If you choose to go the indoor route, consider using a hydroponic system. Growing basil is a great way to enjoy one of nature's tastiest plants. Although basil does well in warmer climates, growing indoors is a way for everyone to enjoy year round basil.
