Orchids are one of the pioneer species on the planet. They are said to have existed way back when dinosaurs roam the earth. There are now over 30,000 species of orchids and many more hybrids of this awe-inducing flower. They are one of the most diverse flower types and have an amazingly large plant family to boot.
"Orchid" is derived from early Greek "Orchis-an" referencing to the way the orchid looks like a little "testicular". Orchids grow worldwide and one of the most economical and useful orchid is the Vanilla Planifolia which is the source of vanilla flavoring. These orchids can be found in Central America and Mexico. The Aztecs figured out how to get the vanilla out of the Vanilla Planifolia. The world's largest producer of this type of orchid is Madagascar in Africa and vanilla and Coca Cola is their biggest consumer.
Orchids have enchanted and amazed us for centuries with the earliest rare orchid pictures showing up in Asian art circa 700 BC. A lot of cultures believed that orchids have special healing powers, in fact they have been recorded in many herbalists and medicinal documents. Orchids started out as just a wild flower that grew on trees and blossomed into one of the most beloved and endearing bloom in the world of flowers.
Charles Darwin and Rare Orchids
When Charles Darwin was formulating the theory of natural selection, orchids were his perfect specimen. He documented the pollination cycles of the Angreacum Sesquipidales. Darwin predicted that at night, when the orchid gave off a strong scent, the insect that pollinated it would be a moth since the orchid's bright white color looks like a light in the dark. Sure enough, a little moth proved his theory and was instrumental in pollinating Angreacum Sesquipidales. Tricks of nature are really cool!
Reproduction
Orchids have such creative ways to reproduce and that is the reason there are now so many species of their kind (at last count, there are over 35,000). There are those orchids that rely on wind pollination while others rely on crawling insects and then some, on flying insects.
Another clever use of flying insects is found used by the Bee Orchid. This clever rare orchid lures bees to its flower by its disguise. This Bee Orchid looks like the female receptive bee which entices the male bee towards its pollinia. Other orchids have long stems which look as they are butterflies when dancing in the wind. Again, pretty dang tricky of these orchids.
Orchids are ancient flowers that are fascinating today more than in any time of history. It is a continuous source of delight for many people around the globe to grow, cultivate, breed and display these flowering beauties in their homes and/or greenhouses.

Orchids are expensive and very difficult to grow. These are the two most prevalent myths. The following basic information about orchids will hopefully dispel those. Yes, some exotic orchids are indeed expensive. You can buy orchids from as little as $30. The most expensive orchid I found is the P.rothschildianum (very endangered) from Malaysia which can cost upwards of $5,000. Considering that an orchid can give us beautiful blooms, for many weeks, even months, and this year after year, the initial cost for a healthy, beautiful orchid is probably not what will stop you from buying one.
Myth number two is often what stops us from acquiring an orchid: Orchids are difficult to grow. Growing orchids successfully is no more difficult than growing many other indoor plants. You just have to have some basic information about orchids, such as:
1. Soil: must be well draining and either spaghnum moss, bark or special orchid soil, depending on the type of orchid.
2. Ideal temperatures are between 55degF and 80degF (12C to 27C), depending on the type of orchid. Cooler temperatures (around 55degF/12C) are important during dormant times. Of course, if you plan to have outdoor orchids, select a type that grows naturally in your climate zone.
3. Light: Indirect light is key. Some type of orchids like a lot of light, some need little light. Again, avoid direct sunlight as it will burn the leaves.
4. Water: Required every 5-8 days, depending on size of pot, type of orchid, temperature and humidity. Never water when the soil, moss or bark are wet. Too much water will kill your orchids.
5. Fertilizer: Like most house plants, orchids need fertilizer. Use a fertilizer that is formulated specifically for orchids. Adjust frequency and concentration for your orchid's specific need, and reduce during dormant times.
6. Humidity levels: Orchids love high humidity. If the relative humidity in your home is below 35%, you must make provisions to increase the humidity for the orchids: mist them frequently, put them on a water tray, and/or bunch a few of them together.
You can successfully grow orchids by following the above list. And before you can grow orchids, it would be helpful to first know about the different types.
Over 20,000 types of orchids and over 100,000 hybrid combinaitons of orchids either grow naturally or have been created by growers. No other plant family has that many species. Of course, not all of these can be grown at home. And you will still have many colors, shapes, and scents to chose from.
Orchids grow in two fundamental ways: terrestrial and epiphytic. Epiphytic orchids grow in trees, attached by their roots to the tree trunk or to branches. The roots are thin and can be very long. They are exposed to the air and extract humidity from the air. These orchids feed on the nutrients from organic matter trapped in the bark. They must be grown on loosely packed bark or bark-like material, in pots that drain really well and allow air to circulate around the roots. Moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) and Dendrobiums are examples of epiphytic orchids.
As the name implies, terrestrial orchids grow in soil. Not just any soil though. They need a well draining type of soil like sphagnum moss. The roots of terrestrial orchids are tuber like. From these, the plant grows leaves and flower stems, like fingers on a hand. Cymbidiums are of terrestrial orchids, as are the well know lady slippers.
Dendrobium and Phalaenopsis orchids are two of the easiest types of orchids to grow and great for beginners. Both types bloom profusely and for many weeks. You are prepared to successfully grow orchids, now that you have this orchid information at your fingertips.
