Rose Gardens Harbor Flowers For Color Continuity

Posted by James Smith

Probably the most famous of all rose flower gardens borders the west wing of the oval office at the White House in Washington, DC. Despite its name, there are more than roses planted in the 750 square foot garden. While roses are the primary flowering plant in the rose gardens, daffodils, hyacinth, tulips and many other flowers provide color throughout the summer.

Rose gardens are typically defined as a flower garden whose primary flowers are roses. Although additional varieties of annuals and perennials may be planted in the garden to help provide consistent colors throughout the growing season, much like is done at the White House rose gardens. Roses planted in this area would normally be garden roses due to their consistent growth height, although miniature roses also fit into the overall scheme.

Climbing roses or roaming roses may also be used to create a flow of color, provided the colors of the roses remained consistent and not mixed in color that do not combine in a pleasing atmosphere. Summer exchanges of annuals keep rose gardens alive with vivid colors all summer long. Many annuals are chosen for their colors to be used to keep rose colors flowing.

Other Communities Offer Viewing Of Rose Gardens

The rose gardens at Berkeley are considered one of the best in the country. Housing over 3,000 rose bushes including 250 varieties that provide their fragrance. Pruning begins in January in preparation for Mother's Day, which is typically the busiest day for visitors in the Berkeley rose gardens.

Developing rose gardens takes more than simply planting a variety of rose bushes in a select area. The growing needs of the variety of roses chosen have to be considered and mixing species can be tricky if their needs are not the same. Additionally, the plants intermingled with roses must be adaptable to the same growth requirements or one or the other will suffer.

For example, roses will require six or seven hours of sunshine each day, preferably morning sun with shade during the afternoon hours. Many plans will wither and die in the bright sunshine and should not be planted in the same area as roses. Conversely, many plants requiring sunshine will need more than six hours and thrive in periods of day-long sunshine. This can be harmful to rose gardens that expose the bushes for eight to 10 hours of sunlight.

How To Ensure Longevity Of Flowers In A Bouquet

Posted by Christine Calimlim

Everyone likes flowers, and bouquets are popular gift items given or received on occasions like weddings or a felicitation ceremony. However, a sad thing about bouquets is that the leaves and flowers wither within a short time frame and then the bouquet looks ugly and crumpled. It might seem to be the perfect idea to purchase artificial flowers to keep them from going bad, but real flowers have something special that artificial ones can never duplicate.

Although bouquets are bound to wither away sooner or later, some measures can be taken to keep their freshness for some time. Here are some suggestions that will ensure that your flowers remain fresh for a longer span.

Firstly, you should enquire with your florist about the life time of the flowers that are in your bouquet, as some varieties such as sunflower, have shorter periods of bloom than flowers like lilies and roses. You need to tell your florist to include only such flowers in the bouquet that will not wither away too soon.

To keep a flower bunch that you have received from someone fresh, you can keep it in a vase filled with water after you trim its stems. This helps the bouquet live longer than it usually would. If a few leaves or flowers have started to wither, you can weed them out so that the bouquet doesn't look ugly with dry leaves sticking out.

You must keep the vase in a location where it receives sufficient light and air. Flowers cannot stay in full bloom for long if they are kept away from air and sunlight; hence you should allow the sun and open air to fall upon the flowers in order to maintain their freshness. Nevertheless, do not overdo it, as too much sunlight can lead to removal of moisture from the flowers, with the consequence that the flowers will wither sooner.

Fake Vs Real Flowers: Which Are Better?

Posted by Katrina Johnson

Everyone agrees that decorating with flowers makes venues & places more lively & inviting. Flower bouquets look really great, and oftentimes make an occasion feel special. The question is, which kind of flowers should you choose: fresh or artificial flowers?

Part 1: Fresh Flowers

Traditionally speaking, fresh flowers are the way to go. Their colors, shapes, scents and general aesthetics all contribute to creating a great ambience. There are so many several picks, depending on the season.

However, you should also remember fresh flowers don't last forever & probably cost more. Fresh flowers require constant care and maintenance. You should consult your florist which flowers are in season & available locally, simply because flowers that aren't in season and/or imported tend to be more expensive. This way, you can have high-class, fresh floral arrangements without having to spend a a lot of cash.

Part 2: Artificial Flowers

There are many types of artificial flowers to select from. The most popular right now are silk flowers, mainly because they require little maintenance, and are are very realistic & affordable. Aside from requiring only minimal cleaning, a lot of people claim they are unable to tell that they're fake without taking a really close look!

Naturally, artificial flowers also have a downside. They do not emit the fresh smells that only fresh flowers have. You can fake it by strategically placing realistic-smelling air fresheners nearby. You should know it still won't be the same though.

Part 3: Which Is Better?

When deciding what kind of flowers you should select, there is no wrong and right answer. It will all depend on the occasion or your purpose. For special events & serious home gardeners, fresh flowers are a fantastic choice. For indoor office and home decors, realistic fake flowers would probably be your best bet. Before you invest in flower arrangements, ask yourself which type is more practical for you & your budget.

The Variety Of Roses Colors: What You Should Know

Posted by William Ilich

There are many different roses out there that you have to choose from, and so you are thus going to have to make some serious decisions on the colors of roses that you are going to want if you are planning on planting roses in your garden.

The Available Colors Of Roses

There are basically all different colors of roses, and so whether you want red, pink, lavender, yellow, white, whatever - you are sure to be able to find it. Not only that, but there are also different methods that are available for you to use which allow you to basically create whatever colors of roses you would like.

The color of your roses is incredibly important for a variety of different reasons, particularly in regards to how you plant them, so that you can come out with a proper and beautiful color scheme in your garden.

After all, you do not want a whole bunch of one color in one area and then have it scattered throughout the rest of the garden, because this is going to create an unbalance. On the other hand, if you choose several colors and then even them out across your garden, then you are going to have an even and picturesque looking garden, which is what you want to strive for.

This may mean that you are going to have to put some time and effort in before you even actually go to plant the roses, however you will see how well worth it all of it was in the end, when you come out with incredibly positive and beautiful results.

The best idea then here is to take a blank piece of paper and sketch out the area of your garden (measurements do not have to be exact) and then you are going to want to use colored pencils and mark in the areas where you would like specific colors.

Then from here you can choose different flowers which are available in the particular colors, and plant them accordingly. If you take the time to plan beforehand like this, then you will see how much easier it is overall, rather than just doing it off the top of your head.

All of the time and effort that you put in beforehand is going to be well worth it in the end, and so make sure that you take your time and have patience during a process such as this.

Everything You Need To Know About Drying Roses

Posted by Emma Weaver

If you consider planting and maintaining of roses, there are many different issues that need to be properly understood in order for the roses to be able to strive properly and be healthy and beautiful, and the matter of drying roses is one of great importance in this regards.

About Drying Roses

Drying roses is a great method that you can use in order to preserve their beauty, however if you are interested in drying roses then you are going to have to make sure that you learn how to do it properly before you actually attempt it.

The first thing that you are going to have to learn about when it comes to drying roses is the matter of what type of technique you are going to use, and air drying and sand drying are the two most commonly used techniques.

Air drying is the easiest and as well requires the least amount of time to complete, and requires only a good pair of shears, some wire, a coat hanger and a dark dry location. With this technique, you begin by cutting the stem from the rose, as close to the head as you can possibly get, and then you want to insert a piece of wire about 6 or 8 inches long into the rose head.

When you are drying roses, you need to make sure that they are upside down, and so you want to take the end of one wire and wrap it around the bottom part of the hanger that you have, and then continue to wrap the wires of each rose until the hanger is full; just make sure that you leave some space in between each rose so that the air can circulate around them.

As well, roses can be hung in bunches upside down from a nail, but just make sure that you leave the stems intact, remove the bottom leaves, and gather a few stems together and hold with an elastic band, and then place them in a dark and dry area until they are completely dried.

Once the roses are dried completely you can basically do whatever you want with them, for instance you can keep them in a memory book or in a picture frame that you hang somewhere in your house for everyone to see.

Just make sure that wherever they are they are not going to get broken, and so if you have children you do not want to put them anywhere within their reach.

Some Tips That Can Make Your Bouquets Last Longer

Posted by Peter Silva

Flowers are one of the meaningful gifts and liveliest decorations for nearly any occasion, all year 'round. Places such as homes and offices are more comfortable and lively when flowers decorate the place. These gifts of nature look and smell fantastic, which makes them so great. They have unique shapes, bright colors, and they have the most wonderful smells only nature can give.

The downside is that flowers tend to wilt prematurely if you don't take care of them well. Not all of us are florists and gardeners, but here are some surefire tips that could make bouquets you receive last a little longer:

- If you receive flowers that aren't in water, act as quick as you can. Drench them in water, or preferably in floral foam or flower food solution. These can be provided by your florist.

- If the flower food or floral foam solution turns cloudy, replace it all. Same goes for those who are using just water; replacing it daily with fresh water is a must.

- No flower food or flower foam? You can make your own! Simply mix a teaspoon of bleach, a tablespoon of sugar, and a gallon of water. Viola! Your homemade flower food. If these ingredients are unavailable, try mixing a 12-ounce can of clear, non-diet soda (like Sprite or 7-Up) with half a gallon of water. The soda's acidity will slow bacteria growth in the water, while the sugar will feed the flowers.

- Re-cut stems using a cutting tool that will not crush the stems such as a sharp knife, pruning shears, or even a good pair of scissors. Cut the stems underwater to allow more water absorption instead of air. A 45-degree angle stem cut will also improve the plants' liquid absorption.

- Some flowers will last longer than others in the arrangement. Once they wilt, take them out of the vase.

- Get rid of any leaves that go below the vase's waterline, because leaves in water tend to promote bacterial growth.

- Keep flowers in a cool, dry spot, in approximately 65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. It is recommended to keep them away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions or radiators, to avoid premature dehydration and wilting.

The Allure Of Roses

Roses have an allure that gardeners find hard to resist and are often thought of as being elegant but demand a lot of care and are difficult-to-grow prima donnas of the garden. Flower gardening that involves growing roses is easy if one picks a strong as well as disease-resistant rose bush. The range of colors as well as forms of roses is many and so are their growing habits and sizes and shapes. Flower gardening that concerns growing a rose requires that the roses be given plenty of sun, has good soil and gets timely care, which include plenty of water and fertilizer as well as proper pruning.

Flower gardening of roses requires that the rose be planted in the cool and moist conditions of spring as well as fall and one must keep its roots moist prior to planting. The roots should be put in a hole that is deep enough and the planting hole should be back-filled with soil containing peat moss and manure that should be three quarter full. The planting hole may be finished by the addition of soil so that a mound forms over canes, for better protection to the rose plant.

Besides planting and growing various flowers, flower gardening also requires taking care of the garden which need not take up too much of one's spare time in spring and summertime. Flower gardening may often end up a failure mainly because one is clueless about giving adequate care to the garden. Knowing the how, when and why of flower gardening is important and so is being out in the garden, as often as possible. Being about the garden will help to notice any problems in the garden and it enables the flower gardening person to have time to fix these problems in a timely manner.

Flower gardening requires knowing the basics of the climate, which soil is best and also how does organic gardening work and how to take care and maintain the garden. The flower gardening exercise would also entail knowing how to handle and know what the special garden situations are that are bound to arise, how to handle weeds and critters, and being water-wise in the care of the garden.
