Gardening is a hobby which is often associated, often unconsciously, with old age. It's very stereotypical, perhaps, when thinking of gardening in it's general abstract form to envision an elderly old woman wearing a big hat and holding a watering spout or spade tending to her flowers. In reality, however, gardening is not only for the elderly among us but for the youthful as well.

It is important to realize that day-to-day life among mankind has fundamentally changed. No longer do we spend gigantic sums of time in the heat, absorbing the summer sun. One consequence of this is the we no longer lack for vitamin D deficiency among our peoples. While Vitamin D can be easily and rapidly substituted for a pill... other components can't be.

Many men and women sit around in chairs all day long, whether at a desk, a lab bench, or tending to a retail sales counter it is important to truly realize this is not the way mankind lived for thousands of years prior to the industrial lifestyle. In fact, our bodies of flesh and bone are really biochemically engineered to be continuously active throughout the entire day: hunting, gathering, building shelters.

So, to recap, the reason gardening is such a fantastic past-time is that it keeps your muscles moving, your heart rate up and your blood vessels dilating and contracting (both from exertion and the heat), and exposes you to just enough sunshine for the mass synthesis of the steroid known as vitamin D. This isn't short, intense stimulation we are talking about, but prolonged consistent, moderate exertion.

There's one more reason gardening is good for overall well-being: most of our foods these days are exposed to industrial compounds of one form or another. Many of the chemicals used in the production and preservation of food have only been in existence for a few years, and as a consequence, the full extent of their effects on the health of men and women (young and old) can't possibly be known at this point. By growing food yourself you eliminate the bizarre health variables introduced into the food supply by the food and agricultural industry. Growing edible plants without the need for fertilizers and other harsh chemicals is surprisingly easy. In fact, all it takes is a compost pile. You take the food scraps you have from your home kitchen, grab some grounds from your coffee pot, and let it rot for a few weeks. Afterwards, put the partially decomposed compost in your vegetable garden and reap the benefits.
