Making A Compost – Secrets Revealed

Posted by Steven Allen

Instead of sending refuse off to the landfill it can be used when making a compost pile or put it in a compost tumbler.

Tumblers will produce compost in about 6-8 weeks but if your not in a hurry you can just pick a spot on the ground.

Choose an out of the way spot for the compost area. Compost does not produce and odor, if it is done right. It is a bit unsightly though.

You may want to work with this ratio a bit to get what works best for you. You should try for roughly 3 parts carbon to 1 part nitrogen. This is not engraved in stone so find what works best for you.

Carbon ingredients or brown matter as it's called is dried leaves, sawdust and newspapers.

Nitrogen ingredients or green matter as it's called is kitchen scraps, herbivore manure such as chickens, horses and cows. No dog or cat droppings, to many chemicals in there feces.

Some people collect all the materials then add them together all at once, this will produce a lot of heat in the pile and produce compost very quickly.

I as a lot of people do add material about once a week. Stack it in a layer first brown then a green layer. Next should be some kind of course material like thick cardboard, hay or straw. This will allow aeration to get in.

Don't forget to add a little moisture and you will be making a compost pile before you know it.

Plus reducing the strain on landfills it will also help the environment. Not to mention that your plants will absolutely love the new food source. It does not hurt to start adapting green ways as this is the wave of the future.

Composting and gardening is an excellent way to spend time with family members. Especially the younger crowd, they need to understand that food comes from the ground and not the market. Composting is awesome but it's also terribly slow. Compost is great for your soil and an important part of organic gardening but it takes months to make. The best way to make compost faster is with a compost tumbler.

Compost is really great stuff. Nature takes all the waste from the trees and plants and turns it into something that can make more trees and plants. It's an on going cycle that would happen whether there's someone there helping the process or not. As someone who likes to compost, our only roll in this is to speed up the composting cycle.

Composting can be done in many ways. You can just pile up your garden waste in the corner of your yard and do nothing else and within a year or two, you'll have some rich, crumbly compost. Or you can worry about moisture content, ratio of browns versus greens and aerate the contents regularly and you may be able to create compost in about two months. The most important part of speeding up your composting is the mixing.

The gardening season can be very short depending on where you live. In the Northeast we have about 4 months of time to grow the flowers, fruits and vegetables that we love. So unless you have a huge bin of compost ready to go on the first day of spring you'll need some more during the growing season. A compost tumbler is perfect for making compost fast. Now you probably won't make enough compost to fill new beds but the amount you can make is perfect to give your plants and nice top dressing.

Another great thing about a compost tumbler is that they're up off the ground and away from pests. If you have mice or snakes in your yard they might be attracted to your compost bin. With a sealed compost tumbler you won't have to worry about it.

Composting is a great way to get things cooking in your garden. And a compost tumbler is the quickest way to make compost. Why not look into getting a compost tumbler for your yard today?
