When the time is right for you to add a pond to your garden, there is more to it than just digging a hole and filling it with water and fish. You will need to think about a liner, plants and of course what type of fish you will be keeping. Design and location of the pond is another big factor.

The water supply needs to be thought about before you start as does the electric supply, these should not be an after thought.
Take your time and think about all these things and anything else you might want to include in your pond right at the beginning. Proper planning and preparation is essential to get the right end result and to make sure you do not forget an important factor of the pond, that might be difficult to add on afterwards.
To add to the look and add some sound to your pond, then what about a fountain, which will also aerate the water for the fish. It is best to give the fountain its own pump so that it can be turned off when not needed, without turning anything else off with it such as the filter pump. You may want to turn it off when you are not there to enjoy it or during the night.
If you want a bit of the wow factor for your pond then you will not go far wrong by adding a waterfall to its design. They can add to the natural lokk and blend into the landscape. The scope for designing a waterfall is as endless as the design of the pond itself.
If you want to make your pond look amazing after dusk then just add some lights, you can put some lights under water or in the waterfall, which gives a truly amazing effect, or just light up the area around the pond. There are many different types of lights available to give all kinds of effects to your pond.
The biggest and most important decision to the pond builder is the kind of fish that will be kept in the new pond, if Koi is the choice then finding a reputable breeder is important as these fish are very expensive, although that goes for any fish breed. There are many different species to choose from and although this part is important it is also fun as well, hand picking the fish that will live in the new home you have created for them.
