Japanese Rock Gardens
Japanese Rock Gardens are basically a combination of both the Indoor Rock Garden and Zen Rock Garden, and are usually enclosed in a shallow sandpit that contains gravel, rocks, grass or other natural elements, such as rock bridges, plants, and bamboo. The primary elements of Japanese Rock Gardens are the rocks and sand, similar to the Zen Rock Garden. The carefully raked sand represents the ocean and wavy lines in the sand represent rough waters and straight lines represent calm waters. The rocks themselves represent a large landmass such as an island. Most Japanese Rock Gardens are meant to be looked at from one primary position, so many times you will find a bench incorporated in the design and located steps from each of the Japanese Rock Gardens.
