Indoor Hydroponic Gardening: An Easy Way To Get Fresh Vegetables Year-Round

Posted by Sarah Duke

Water working is the Latin meaning of the word hydroponics. The art of growing plants in water is a new and productive science. The plants are filled with nutrients. Indoor hydroponic gardening is a fun way to grow plants without the need of soil.

Typically, decomposing material breaks down and spreads out nutrients into the ground. The nutrients are taken into the roots of the plant. This is how a plant is fed. A hydroponic system is different. It uses water that has the nutrients in it. The nutrients do not hurt the environment and there are no chemicals or insecticides used. Hydroponics reveals that plants can grow effectively without the need of soil.

To begin creating a hydroponic system, one must first support the plants in an inert medium like a fiber, stone or sand that does not utilize soil. The support acts like an anchor for the plant roots. The medium is porous and can retain air and water to feed the plant. When soil is taken out of the equation, disease is also.

Hydroponic gardening has many benefits. There is less work maintaining a hydroponic garden. It requires no pulling of weeds or using a rototiller. This type of garden can be installed anywhere. It requires a small space only. Hydroponically grown produce has been shown to have a more nutritional value than produce grown in the soil. It is even said to taste better than vegetables grown the old fashioned way.

Many plants will thrive with this system. Examples of the types of plants that do well are tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, lettuces, leafy greens, herbs and many types of flowers. These are considered fruit bearing plants. They can be grown annually in a hydroponic system.

Pests are not a problem with an indoor hydroponic garden. Produce will be pesticide free. Plants grow faster than in soil. Plants in soil have larger root systems than hydroponically grown plants. Hydroponic plants do not require a lot of additives or fertilizers as they receive all the nutrients they need.

An economical way to grow produce indoors is to use a hydroponic system. The plants can be grown all year round. They are not expensive to use. There are no weeds or insects to bother the gardener. It is easy to do and a fun activity for all ages.

Indoor gardening enthusiasts might be interested in a hydroponic drip system as a way to grow flowers and veggies all year long. One of the easiest ways you can do this is by using a hydroponic grow room. These structures supply all the right conditions for your plants to flourish.
