Indoor Bonsai Trees
Bonsai is the art of miniaturization of trees or plants by first growing them in containers and includes techniques for shaping, watering and repotting in specific Bonsai Pots. The art of Bonsai originated in China 4000 years ago and the word Bonsai is now used as an umbrella term for all miniature trees in containers or pots. The Japanese adopted the art and used miniaturized Bonsai Plants grown in containers to decorate their homes and gardens which gave birth to the Indoor Bonsai.
Indoor Bonsai are Bonsai Plants that have been specifically cultivated for the indoors. Traditionally, Bonsai are shaped from temperate climate trees grown in containers but kept outdoors because they still require sun exposure and the winter dormancy period. Kept in the artificial environment of a home, these trees will become weakened and die. For Indoor Bonsai the techniques have been applied to tropical plants that do not require the dormancy period and because most Indoor Bonsai are rooted in small Bonsai Pots, drought resistant houseplants are the best suited for Indoor Bonsai cultivation.
Indoor Bonsai are not genetically dwarfed Bonsai Plants and they can be created from nearly any tree or shrub species and only remain small through the resulting confinement of Bonsai Pots and with crown and root pruning. Specific species are more sought after for use as Indoor Bonsai, because they have characteristics that make them appropriate for the smaller design.
Indoor Bonsai come in basically two categories the Tropical/Subtropical, which include Bonsai Plants such as the Ficus, Serissa, Fukien Tea, Brush Cherry, Bougainvillea, Dwarf Umbrella, and some of the Elms. The other category is Evergreen, which includes Junipers, Boxwoods, most of the Pines, and Azalea. The only other category is Deciduous which includes Maple, Larch, Crabapple, Apricot, Hornbeam, Gingo, and many of the remaining Elm species, but these types are not suitanle for Indoor Bonsai as they require the winter rest period, which is introduced only by the cold weather change.
