How The Garden Shed Got Classy
Rather than storing their dirty garden tools in the house, people have traditionally used garden sheds. However, people are starting to use this extra space for more imaginative means. Sheds are now being turned into extra rooms, or studios for personal or professional hobbies, rather than being used as simple garden storage.
A garden shed can prove the ideal place to practice a hobby which requires a lot of space, or which causes mess. For example, woodwork, which requires large tools and creates a lot of dust and shavings. Another shed entered in the shed of the year contest, has been turned into a sewing room, complete with sewing machine and special shelving designed to hold bobbins, scissors and needles.
Making a garden studio can prove a great way to work from home. A resourceful shed owner turned her shed into the perfect base for her book restoration company, complete with library and reading loft. Another shed owner with her own graphic design company created her own home studio to run her business from.
Extra living rooms or guest accommodations have also been created from garden sheds by the addition of heating and wall insulation. By creating an elevated platform on which to build his shed, one man was able to create a guest house with a special glass wall to offset his impressive countryside views. He also added sky TV, a compost toilet room and bunk beds to ensure his guests' comfort.
For the more creative shed fan, there really is an opportunity to create something special. What about a replica of Dr Who's tardis, or a mini nightclub, or an imitation train carriage? Or perhaps your own mini garden pub? If you're willing to put in the time and effort you can make something truly unique from just your humble garden shed.
