Herb Horticulture
Herbs have a long history of human use.Their use to treat disease has been regarded as wizardly , and they have long made food more palatable. If you would like to grow them here are a few tips.
Design a plot
Decide which types of herb you would like to grow and if you want a permanent plan or a changing one from year to year
Can you fit the herbs into your present garden? You may need to consult expert books for data on the requirements and uses of the plants you are considering.
List or draw your garden on paper first. Separate the annuals from the perennials so when the time comes that you have to pull out the annuals, you won't be disturbing the perennials. Perennials can be planted on the edge of your garden so when it is time to till your garden they won't be in danger of getting dug up.
If they are going to get enough light the smaller plants should be nearer the front and larger ones at the rear. Some plants take up a lot of space as they grow and so must be planted a reasonable distance apart.
An alternative to having herbs in the flower beds is to grow them in herb containers. This stops the spread of invasive herbs. One type of pot has several holes in the sides into which different plants can be put. A plant that requires a lot of sun and little water can grow in the open top, while others than need damper conditions or more shade at lower levels.
Possible Layouts
Perhaps you would like a single square herb bed. This could also be divided by paths provided each section measured at least 3 feet. A nice border can be constructed of either stone or bricks. A wheel shaped design could be used with the plants going between the spokes of the wheel. An alternative might be a wooden ladder on the ground with plants between the rungs.
Herbs often have dissimilar needs as to the alkalinity or acidity of the soil.Your plan should allow for this so the plants you choose suit the soil you have available. The information on seed packets can guide you as to the correct cultivation of the plants.
You will find herbs are easier than most plants to grow provided a few minimum requirements are met. Good output comes from fertile soil, adequate watering and drainage and suitable levels of sunlight
