Garden Essentials – Grafting And Budding

Posted by Phil Caxton

To increase the growth of plants and also improve and increase different varieties of plants and trees, different gardening techniques are commonly used. There are a number of traditional methods for reproducing plants and trees. The main thing to consider is the sensitivity of the plant. Budding and grafting are gardening techniques used to improve and increase the variety of plants. Plants which can be budded can also be grafted. Another form of bud grafting is budding. June and mid August are considered the best times to carry out budding.

Select appropriate stock:

Both indoor as well as outdoor plants can be budded and grafted. Plants help in beautifying the place and hence it becomes essential to increase their variety. Rose plants have often been grafted to improvise on different varieties and for this you have to choose appropriate stock for grafting. Try and identify a reputed and reliable nursery for purchasing the stocks needed. Plants should be allowed to thrive well till the next budding season and hence they should be rooted as well as spaced well.

Apply the right techniques:

Ensure that the buds are healthy and plump while you are selecting them. The best ones are the ones available at the base of the leaf stalk. Remove a complete shoot from a plant and very carefully snip the tip, which should be done before the commencement of budding. You need to select a good bud stick for better results. An inch of the leaf stalk is just enough, and the rest of the leaves can be removed from the bud stick. To retain the moisture in the bud stick, keep it in a bucket of water.

The bark of the stock has to be slowly lifted with the help of a budding knife. It is only when the bark can be carefully lifted that budding can be done. Watering stocks for two to three days is essential especially during the summer months. Plan the budding process well and also ensure that you use a proper budding knife which is one of the most essential tools required. Repotting the stocks well will ensure the growth of health new sprouts.

Within a matter of days you are able to see fresh new sprouts which later grow into healthy plants. With application of the right techniques and preparation you are sure to get the best results. Budding and grafting has always been done since centuries for producing plants and trees of better quality and varieties.
