Buffalo Grass Seed Forms An Amazing Grass

Posted by Andy Zain

There is a special kind of grass that has grown wild on the Great Plains for many years. It is called buffalo grass. This grass has adapted to extreme changes of temperature, and it is strong and durable. It needs very little moisture to thrive and stay green. Buffalo grass seed produces a durable, easy to maintain grass cover.

Being different from other grasses, buffalo grass turns green later in the spring. With only a small amount of moisture it will remain dark green all summer. In the fall it quits growing, becomes dormant and turns a light beige color. It remains dormant throughout the rest of the fall and winter.

Normally, this grass germinates very slowly, but by using potassium nitrate, it can be made to germinate in as little as fourteen days. It will grow up to 5 inches within 50 days of planting! Once it germinates it spreads fast by sending out runners similar to strawberry plants. These characteristics are tremendous advantages if you need a quick grass cover.

This grass is often used for erosion control by road construction companies and home builders. It needs six to eight hours of sunlight and well-drained soil. It is very important that buffalo grass receive direct morning sunlight. It does extremely well in hot, dry places where many other grasses die out.

Scientists have developed a new generation of buffalo grass. This new type is more dense because the roots are closer together, and it produces more plants by sending off runners, allowing it to cover the area faster the first year after it is planted. You don't have to worry about weeds, because buffalo grass is so thick, they can't grow in it.

Buffalo grass grows well in soils that aren't based in coarse sand. The problem of coarse sand can be remedied, if necessary, by adding organic material to it. In the spring, once the temperature of the ground reaches 60 degrees, buffalo grass seed can be planted. The cutoff date for planting it is 75 days before the average hard frost in the fall.

In order to prepare the ground for planting, till it to a depth of six to twelve inches. Once this is done, the ground should be worked until the ground is well broken up and clod free. This will allow the roots to be good and healthy as the grass establishes itself. Rake the surface of the ground and remove any large weed debris. Once the soil is prepared to this point, it needs to be firmed with a roller so that your foot doesn't sink more than one-half inch.

After the ground is prepared and ready, it is planting time. Broadcast the seed across the ground surface. It should not be seeded more than one-half inch deep.

People like buffalo grass because it germinates quickly, it is simple to plant and it's very easy to take care of. If you need grass quickly in a certain area, use buffalo grass seed.
