Aquaponics: Five Things to Consider

Posted by Brandon Sharp

Setting up an aquaponic system is an easy task though it may require a small bit of knowledge regarding aquaponics. You probably have some knowledge already if you have made the decision to build your system. Listed below are five essential items of interest that may help you to obtain phenomenal results; or at least results you'll be proud of.

Location: A room naturally illuminated by sunlight would provide the perfect location and lighting for the fish and plants in your aquaponic system. The room should also be moderately heated in order to obtain optimal results. The location of the aquaponic system is highly important to the development of the fish and plants.

Oxygenizing the water: To keep your fish comfortable and content, their water must be oxygenized daily. Having pleasant living conditions for the fish can only complement the success of your system.

Selecting Your Fish: The aquaponic system works well with almost all types of fish. Yet, there are restrictions in some states. Contacting the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in your area for verification of the legality will keep you and your aquaponic system within legal boundaries.

Placing the Pots Conveniently: Placement of the aquaponic system's components is one of the great advantages of having an aquaponic system. Not only can you place your system almost anywhere, but you can place it within easy reach. If bending is difficult for you, a waist level system would be ideal and easily set up. In order to make the harvest much easier, you can place the grow beds or the entire system at your waist level. This placement makes the daily care routine a much easier activity.

Adding Additives: There are cases in which your fish may not provide all the nutrients needed by your plants. If the quantity is less than the plants require, you will have to supply them with the respective substances. In most cases you may have to add iron, calcium carbonate or potassium carbonate.

Aquaponics is a simple activity which will provide you with the fresh vegetables and fish in a short period of time. The aforementioned tips will help you to achieve success in the production of your own organic garden.
