A Short Guide To Gardening Using Garden Pots

Posted by Tom Murphy

Sounds easy enough - take a few garden pots, add a couple of plants, keep them watered and give them sunlight. Actually, it really is that simple. Not only that, gardening in pots is a very versatile and inexpensive way to garden. You don't have to have a big yard or a wealth of knowledge and experience to develop your own container garden. But, if you want to give your container garden a better chance of success, there are a few pointers that can help you with this wonderful hobby.

Start off with smaller sized pots and then gradually work your way up to bigger sizes. This way, you have a greater understanding of how the plant will perform in the kinds of pots you have. Keeping your pots small at first also makes it easier to move them around to find the optimal sunlight or fill a particular space that needs to capture your attention. You don't want to try moving around a large pot full of soil and water.

Look for pots that have water drainage holes in the bottom. Most have at least one good sized hole. Follow the watering requirements that come with the plant. When you are watering, you should stop when you see the water coming out the bottom. Also, keep in mind that clay pots that aren't coated on the inside will soak up quite a bit of water from the potting soil.

You don't want to plant too many plants into one pot as they can get overcrowded. Its very important to group your plants in the same pot according to their soil, water and sun requirements. This will give your plants a better chance of growing successfully.

Don't be afraid to experiment. If you go through a few plants until you achieve your desired outcome, its well worth it. Not only is container gardening fun, but it also provides a beautiful environment for any drab space.
